What is the Difference Between Breast Augmentation and Breast Implants?

Breast Enlargement

Whether it’s to enhance appearance, boost self-confidence, or following breast cancer treatment, breast surgery continues to prove incredibly popular throughout the UK. However, despite breast surgery being in the top three plastic surgery procedures in the country, there remains a lack of understanding of the process and its involvement.

If you’re exploring breast surgery as an option, you’ll probably hear terms like ‘breast augmentation surgery‘ and ‘breast implants‘ regularly. But what do they actually mean? Using the 30 years’ experience our surgeon Mr Sheikh Ahmad has in the industry, we’re able to outline the difference between the two and hopefully help you get a better understanding.

Simply put, breast augmentation is the process involved, whereas breast implants are the actual physical objects inserted into the breast. The two go hand-in-hand, but it’s important to understand the difference.

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery is used to increase breast size. In short, it involves placing the breast implant under tissue or chest muscles.

There are many reasons people opt for breast augmentation, the main being to enlarge their breasts, to restore breast size or shape, especially following pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss, to improve the symmetry between breasts, and to restore breasts after breast cancer surgery.

What are breast implants?

Breast implants are the physical prosthetics placed inside the breast. There are two main types of implants, saline and silicone. So, what’s the difference?

The main distinction between the two is that saline implants can either be pre-filled or inserted into the breast empty, then filled, whereas silicone implants are always inserted into the breast whole.

Surgeons have used saline implants for the past 60 years. They are made up of an elastic silicone shell that is either inserted into the breast, then filled with sterile saline solution, such as saltwater, or pre-filled before insertion. The feel, firmness, and final shape of the breast can be impacted by the different amounts of saline solution inserted.

Silicone gel-filled implants are created using a silicone outer shell filled with silicone gel. They come in various shapes and sizes, which means the recipient can choose the ones they want to achieve the look they desire. While silicone-filled implants are often described as feeling and looking more like natural breasts, they pose more risks if they leak. It’s worth mentioning that you have to be legally 22-years-old to receive silicone implants, whereas the minimum age for saline implants is 18.

Both saline and silicone implants come in a range of sizes and can have either smooth or textured shells, to meet each recipient’s specific needs. It really is a matter of preference, and of course, it’s always best to discuss the look you’re after with Mr Ahmad, who will be able to advise.
