MENU

Gynecomastia is the term used to describe excess fat and tissue in the male breast area. Treatment for the condition involves the use of high definition VASER liposuction and small surgical incisions to radically reduce the appearance of ‘moobs’ and ‘man boobs’ and create a more defined chest area.

Gynecomastia commonly occurs in men during puberty, when excess levels of testosterone are present, or as a result of aging, weight gain/loss or illness. It can also develop as a result of steroid, drug and alcohol use. The condition results in excess tissue and fat developing in the male breast area and for many men can have an extremely negative impact on self-confidence and body image.

Luckily, treatment is quick, effective and straightforward. Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure and surgical incisions, if required, are small, subtle and kept to a minimum.

Recovery is swift and, for anyone who has lived for the condition for any period of time, the results can be life changing, allowing them to feel more comfortable in their own skin.

Frequently asked questions

ABOUT GYNECOMASTIA

+ What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is the term used to describe excess fat and breast tissue in the male breast area, the results of which are often referred to as ‘man boobs’ or ‘moobs’. There are different ‘classes’ of gynecomastia, ranging from mild through to severe, and treatment varies depending on class and severity.

+ What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia commonly occurs in men during puberty, when excess levels of testosterone are present, or as a result of aging, weight gain/loss or illness. It can also develop as a result of steroid, drug and alcohol use.

+ How Can I Get Rid Of Man Boobs?

Luckily, treatment for gynecomastia, or man boobs, is quick, effective and straightforward. There are different ‘classes’ of gynecomastia, ranging from mild through to severe, and treatment varies depending on class and severity. A combination of high definition VASER liposuction and minimal surgical incisions are the most common solution and provide effective results in most cases.

+ Can Gynecomastia Be Treated Without Surgery?

Cases where no glandular extraction is required can sometimes be effectively treated with liposuction alone, which is a minimally invasive procedure with very quick recovery rates. Certain medication can also help to reduce the symptoms of pain from the condition - these medications should be taken under medical supervision.

+ Will Gynecomastia Go Away With Exercise?

Fatty deposits in the breast area, for both men and women, can be very difficult to shift with exercise alone. In particular, should the condition be the result of extreme weight loss it can be impossible to remedy naturally. In cases such as these, liposuction is a safe, minimally invasive, effective solution.

+ How Much Does Gynecomastia Treatment Cost?

Starts from £4,000.

CONSULTATION

What Happens At My First Consultation?u

Mr Ahmad takes a brief history and assesses your chest and the extent of your condition. All treatment options are discussed in detail and Mr Ahmad gives his suggestions regarding the best options available. Fees and surgery venue are discussed. A second appointment is then scheduled to finalise your treatment.

SURGERY

How Is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?

Liposuction removes the fatty excess (pseudo-gynaecomastia, chest wall fat, pectoral fat). The fatty tissue is detached and simultaneously removed with a suction device.

Small ‘stab’ incisions are made in the skin around the pectoral area and a liposuction cannula is inserted. Usually there will be two to three stab incisions at the completion of the procedure.

Any thick glandular tissue will usually have to be removed surgically, as the liposuction technique will not remove this. An incision is made at the edge of the areola to make the scar as inconspicuous as possible.

Is Gynecomastia Treatment Painful?

Liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure and should incisions need to be made they are kept to a minimum. As a result tissue is not destroyed and the pain and discomfort is vastly reduced.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Treatment takes up to two hours.

How Will I Feel After Treatment?

There will be a degree of discomfort in the areas from where the fat and tissue has been harvested. Discomfort is easily controlled with painkillers and a compression garment is worn for two weeks. Post-operative bruising is inevitable but settles down in few weeks.

How Long Will I Be In Hospital?

Most commonly gynecomastia surgery is done as a day case, however if you have surgery in the evening you will normally stay overnight. Mr. Ahmad will review you the morning after surgery and, if everything is satisfactory, will discharge you from the hospital normally by midday.

What Clothes Should I Bring To Wear After The Operation?

A loose button-down shirt is ideal. Avoid clothes that would need pulling on over your head. A compression garment is provided and must be worn for two weeks.

Are There Any Side Effects To The Operation?

The most common side effect is feeling sleepy for a few hours. Sometimes the anaesthetic or morphine make you feel sickly, but usually for a short time only.

You may feel slightly bloated for a few days. This is often due to slight constipation caused by medication. A gentle laxative (lactulose, movicol or senna) will help resolve this.

AFTER CARE, RECOVERY & THE FUTURE

Will I Have A Follow Up Appointment?

An outpatient appointment will be made for approximately one week after treatment.

What’s The Recovery Time?

Due to the techniques used, recovery time is generally quick. If liposuction alone has been used, you should feel back to your normal self almost immediately. If surgical incisions have been made, there will be longer recovery time for the skin/scars to heal, approximately 2-4 weeks.

Do I Need To Take Time Off Work After Surgery?

We suggest two weeks off from desk job duties and 4-6 weeks off from heavy work.
