Our Tummy Tuck Guide

We have created a comprehensive tummy tuck guide to tell you everything you need to know about tummy tucks. Is a tummy tuck right for you? How much does a tummy tuck cost? Are there different types of tummy tucks? All of these questions and more are answered in our guide.

A tummy tuck, as defined by the NHS, is “a cosmetic surgery to improve the shape of the tummy area (abdomen). It can involve removing excess loose skin, fat and stretch marks and tightening the abdominal muscles.” (2) So what does it involve, and is it right for you?

Abdominoplasty

About Abdominoplasty

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and tightens muscles that cannot be achieved through exercise. It's usually recommended for those with a healthy BMI rather than being a procedure used for weight loss.

Removing excess skin after losing weight.

Tightening skin and muscles after pregnancy.

Removing scars.

When considering tummy tuck surgery, there are several things to consider. You need to think about factors such as:

What you want to get from a tummy tuck

The results you may be able to achieve

Whether you are eligible for a tummy tuck procedure

The recovery time required

The cost of tummy tuck surgery

Mini Abdominoplasty

What Is a Mini Abdominoplasty?

If you have researched tummy tucks, you might have come across mini tummy tucks. A mini abdominoplasty is a tummy tuck to remove excess skin in the lower abdomen below the belly button. It has some benefits: it is less invasive than a full tummy tuck and can still give you the silhouette you want. It can also have a shorter recovery time than a full tummy tuck.

Cost is naturally a concern when considering any cosmetic procedures. If you are considering a choice between a mini tummy tuck and a full tummy tuck, a mini tummy tuck is often the cheaper option. The cost can be much less as the procedure is shorter and less involved when compared to a full tummy tuck.

Benefits

Tummy Tuck Benefits

What are the benefits of a tummy tuck? Abdominoplasty surgery can benefit many people, even with other cosmetic procedures. You might have a tummy tuck for several reasons, such as repairing your abdominal muscles after pregnancy or removing excess skin after losing weight. Benefits of a tummy tuck include:

Removing and tightening loose skin for a flatter abdomen

Removing scar tissue after surgery or other scars

Tightening the abdominal muscles

Improving your overall figure and your satisfaction with the look

Raising self-esteem and confidence

Strengthen weakened core muscles

As well as aesthetic benefits, a tummy tuck could have some health benefits. For example, some women choose to have tummy tuck surgery after pregnancy to help correct separated abdominal muscles.

Be as healthy as possible. Keeping your weight steady with a good diet and regular exercise is important. Your GP can give you advice on this. If you smoke, stopping at least six weeks before the operation will help to reduce the risk of complications.

Before Surgery

Surgery Preparation

Before having tummy tuck surgery, there are things you will do to prepare. Your surgeon will talk to you about the steps you need to take to ensure you are ready for the surgery. There are some things they may advise so that you are healthy and in the best position to have the procedure. This could include:

Advising you to lose weight

Advising you to stop smoking before surgery to reduce the risk of chest infections and improve healing rates

Advising you to stop taking the contraceptive pill several weeks before surgery (this reduces the risk of a blood clot)

On the day of your operation, you will be under general anaesthesia, which means you must stop eating and drinking several hours before the procedure. You will be given compression stockings to wear, which helps to prevent blood clots. Mr Ahmad will speak to you before the surgery, ensuring you’re happy, comfortable and calm.

Procedure

Surgery Procedure

What exactly happens during surgery will depend on what type of tummy tuck you choose to get. Which option you choose can be influenced by a few factors, including how much skin you want removing and the scar size you would be happy with. Mr Ahmad discusses this in detail and can advise you on which is best for you during consultations.

Cosmetic Surgery

Full Tummy Tuck

A full or standard tummy tuck involves surgery on the whole abdomen. The surgeon will first make an incision across your pubic area, from one hip to the other (along the bikini line). The next step is another incision around the belly button. The surgeon will then remove excess fat and skin and tighten the muscles before pulling down the remaining skin and making a new hole to position your belly button correctly. This procedure will leave a scar along the public area and around the belly button, usually hidden by underwear and other clothes.

Cosmetic Surgery

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck is an alternative if you want to have only a small amount of fat or skin removed from your lower abdomen. In this procedure, the surgeon makes a small, curved incision above your pubic area. The belly button will remain in the same place, although it can look slightly different, and the surgery scar is often smaller than a full tummy tuck.

Cosmetic Surgery

Extended Tummy Tuck

An extended tummy tuck goes beyond the standard tummy tuck, also addressing the hips and the sides of the lower back. The incision extends to the lower back, and the exact steps are taken to remove fat and tighten muscles and skin. The naval is also usually repositioned, as with a full tummy tuck. This type of tummy tuck is often chosen after weight loss or for those struggling to remove “love handles” with diet and exercise. It requires a little more recovery time as the work is more extensive.

Cosmetic Surgery

Circumferential Tummy Tuck/Lower Body Lift

A circumferential tummy tuck or lower body lift goes even further, with an incision made around the belly and lower back. It is much more involved than other types of tummy tuck, and it’s only suitable for some people. Also called a belt lipectomy, it allows for several different procedures to be completed at the same time as the tummy tuck. These include a butt lift or augmentation and an outer thigh lift. This tummy tuck generally requires around five or six weeks of recovery, twice as much as a full tummy tuck.

Cosmetic Surgery

Recovery

Considering the recovery from surgery is essential when planning cosmetic surgery such as a tummy tuck. You must be able to get the rest that you need after having surgery. Knowing what to expect in the recovery period will also help you to make the right decision about getting a tummy tuck.

Painkillers are prescribed to help with discomfort; you will go home with stitches that will dissolve on their own and instructions on caring for the wound as it heals. The length of recovery will depend on the type of tummy tuck and other factors. It could take between around three to six weeks to recover. It’s important not to do too much and to allow yourself to rest. Limiting physical activity will help you to heal and ensure you don’t disturb your stitches during healing. The most important thing to do is to listen to your surgeon’s advice on recovery.

Cosmetic Surgery

Results

The results you can expect from tummy tuck surgery will be affected by the type of tummy tuck you choose. Results may vary depending on the individual too, and it’s essential to have a realistic idea of what can be achieved. The expectations for results are discussed during the consultation phase.
