Preparing for Breast Surgery
The first part of preparing for breast surgery is discussing the procedure and going through your initial consultation. The NHS recommends doing your own research to find out more about the procedure you are interested in too. (3) Once the procedure is scheduled, you will want to make sure you are prepared for the day and for the recovery period. You can make sure that you have addressed any concerns that you have and discussed what the procedure involves before it takes place. You might also find it helpful to know who will be there before, during, and after the surgery.
Bringing the right clothes to wear after the procedure will also help you to be prepared. A loose button-down shirt is ideal to wear, making it easier to get dressed without too much discomfort. Wearing a support bra is also recommended after you have had surgery.

Are There Any Risks or Side Effects?
Any surgery comes with risks, but breast surgery is generally safe and effective. The British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive, and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) points out that serious complications occur in less than 1 in 100 operations for breast augmentation. It's important to remember that all surgery has some risks, including bleeding and clots, an infection, and allergic reaction. However, these problems are also rare.

What You Can Expect
The surgery itself will involve different steps depending on the procedure, but will usually include the administration of anaesthesia and making incisions in the appropriate places to complete the procedure. Any pain that you feel afterwards can be managed with pain control.
Knowing what to expect after you have had breast surgery can help you to feel more comfortable. You will be given information about what will happen, how you will feel, and some things you can do to ensure you are more comfortable after surgery.
It’s recommended that you initially wear a support bra after surgery and a well-fitting bra for at least six weeks after surgery. Swelling and scarring can take time to heal, and you can discuss general healing times for each procedure with your surgeon. You will generally need to take time off work and rest after having breast surgery, so it’s beneficial to arrange that before you have your procedure. You will have a follow-up appointment between seven to ten days after having surgery. This provides an opportunity to check that you are healing properly and happy with everything so far.
How Long Do You Stay in Hospital After Breast Surgery?
Breast surgery will usually be completed during the day, allowing you to go home on the day of the procedure. However, there are times when you will stay overnight if you have surgery in the evening.
