All You Need to Know About Abdominoplasty

Pregnancy or weight loss tends to leave a lot of people with loose skin in their abdominal region. A healthy diet and regular exercise, as well as a physically active lifestyle, can help you shed the excess fat and give you a well-toned body. But if diet and lifestyle changes are not delivering the results you want even after your dedicated efforts, then abdominoplasty is a procedure worth considering.

What is Abdominoplasty?

Abdominoplasty, also known as a ‘tummy-tuck,’ is a cosmetic surgical procedure that removes fat and excess loose skin from the abdominal region to make the muscles in the abdomen walls appear tighter. It is a major surgery that requires serious consideration and consultation with a doctor, taking into account many factors.

Consultation Before Abdominoplasty

The procedure is recommended to healthy individuals who don’t have any underlying conditions or illnesses. It is mainly suitable for women who have gone through multiple pregnancies and previously obese people who have recently shed a lot of weight. Such people are likely to develop loose skin in their abdominal region. The first thing you should know is that abdominoplasty should be considered as the last option after you have tried out a more natural approach such as healthy diet, regular exercise, and lifestyle changes.
If a healthy diet and lifestyle are not working to shed the excess abdominal fat, then the doctor may advise you to look into the surgery. In the consultation process, patients are made aware of many things about the surgery, such as:

  • It is not recommended to have a tummy tuck surgery if you plan to get pregnant again in the future. You should only consider it if you’re fine with not having more children.
  • It is not recommended as a shortcut to losing weight without trying to make diet and lifestyle changes.
  • It is recommended to people who are otherwise healthy as in no serious medical history, no underlying illnesses, or dormant conditions.
  • A detailed medical examination will be done to assess whether you’re fit to undergo the procedure.

How is abdominoplasty performed? What happens after the surgery?

The general procedure of abdominoplasty includes anesthetising the patient, making an incision in the abdomen region, extracting fat and removing loose skin, and then sealing the incision with sutures. The size of the incision depends on the type of surgery performed – a complete abdominoplasty will require a bigger incision than a partial abdominoplasty.
The area where the incision will be made is also decided together by the patient and doctor prior to the surgery. In many cases, the incision is made anywhere below the waistline so that it stays hidden at most times. Patients do have a say on where they prefer the incision to be made, which can be discussed with the doctor.
Recovering after the surgery can take a few weeks based on your condition. It’s not going to be the same for everyone. During the recovery period, continuous rest is advised, and any activity that causes tension in the abdominal region should be avoided.
